Why do we advertise?

I remember 5 years ago I got my first sales job at a marketing firm with no exprience. Just an overwhelming amount of hunger to learn sales and see how a business can run and make money.

I started out doing door to door selling water. Thats right water. However not just water but water being delivered to your door with a click of a button.

I thought at first it would be easy and I would make my moneys worth on the amount of time I spent doing door to door.

I found out very quickly that it takes forever to find people who want water delivered.

First I was running from door to door talking to people as fast as I could just to find someone who was interested.

Still at the end of the day I was limited to the amount of people I could reach. Then one day the office had a meeting and we discussed how we are not getting enough leads or even sales with just doing door to door.

The owner was mad and told everyone they had 2 weeks to get 35 sales each or we would be let go. Then as she was saying this it hit me. I am just going to make my own advertisements and post them anywhere and everywhere!

I was worried that everyone eles got the same idea which some did and I thought I was screwed. I didn’t know how to make catchy videos or have fancy computer to do everything I thought was required to make effective advertisements.

That night I spent about 7-8 hours watching videos on how to make an effective advertisement and what the right thing to grab someone’s attention to make them want to buy your product. I was lost and confused then I just made my it as simple and straight forward by just blasting it on all socials targeting people in my city.

It took 2 days be for I got the first person to reach out to me through my advertisement that I posted about getting the water delivery set up. That night I got home and opened my inbox and see 3 more people reach out about the water all while I was still doing door to door.

As I was doing door to door I would tell the people I did talk with about my facebook and if they didnt want the water at that time to follow my account so they could easily find me when they did need water.

At the end of the first week I took my weekly sales of 10-15 before my advertisement to 20-23 in just one week with the simple but effective advertising.

Come Friday morning we had weekly sales review for the office. I found out I had the most sales out of the office. The one with the most sales of the week had to speak infront of the office. I then was able to speak in front of everyone and explain my strategy for getting myself more sales than ever before.

I explained how I did the basic door to door sales like everyone else, but that I added my own personal advertising to help with my sales. I explained that I started looking into how big companies advertise (like insurance, restaurants and cosmetic companies who can spend 100k plus per advertisement.)

Those big companies can make flashy ads that dont always represent what the comsumers problem is or how to solve it.

My advertising was simple "Do you need water delivered straight to your door? Is it a pain getting water from the store and having to lift it up many times befor even getting it home? Do you drink alot of bottles of water? Then water delivery just might work for you!" It was simple straight to the point and effective.

To end this off, the point of the story is that you dont need 100k+ to spend on advertising. You dont need to have flashy catchy songs to go along with them either. All you need is to put them in the right place, in front of the right audience.
